Eye test for the driving licence in Hanover
For your application you need an eye-test certificate (Sehtestbescheinigung) from an officially recognised eye-test provider. This is usually quick at an optician – but ask first whether they offer the driving licence eye test.
What applies to the driving licence?
- Visual acuity of at least 0.7. Central daytime visual acuity of at least 0.7 (with or without a visual aid). (§ 12 FeV, Anlage 6)
- Eye-test certificate no more than 2 years old. The eye-test certificate (Sehtestbescheinigung) must be no more than two years old when you apply. (§ 12 FeV, Anlage 6)
- Bring your ID card or passport – the eye-test provider must check your identity (§ 12 Abs. 2 FeV).
- Instead of the eye test you can also submit a certificate from an ophthalmologist (§ 12 Abs. 4 FeV). If you don’t pass the eye test, an examination by an ophthalmologist is required.

Who may carry out the eye test?
- Opticians count by law as officially recognised eye-test providers (§ 67 Abs. 4 FeV) and are therefore not on any official list. Opticians in our directory come from OpenStreetMap and are labelled “please confirm licence eye test in advance”: we have not checked whether the shop offers the eye test.
- Other providers – often driving schools or first-aid providers – need recognition from the state authority. We haven’t yet integrated such a list for Lower Saxony.
- In addition, doctors at the public health office (Gesundheitsamt) and occupational physicians, among others, count as recognised (§ 67 Abs. 5 FeV).
